Say We’d Meet…

…outside of the blogosphere, in Montreal at the end of May. You’re in town for the week—we’d catch up over coffee. Friday late morning could work, after I drop my daughter at the daycare. I could meet you at Shäika, or better yet, at Kokkino Café—I’m in the mood for a cinnamon bun. Let’s say … Continue reading »

Five Dirty Words

This post was inspired by Ross Murray. This post should have its mouth washed with soap. Fuck. The universal swear. Used in over 6800 languages, you’ll hear it in movies, songs, and out of the mouths of children. You can even read it in the Bible: Fuck is more popular than herpes at a frat … Continue reading »

A Sad State of Affairs

There was a time when Montreal ranked among the world’s best summer cities, and one of the top 10 best cities to visit…if you’re fluent in French, and aren’t planning on posting your vacation pictures on Instagram. Last Wednesday, Jennifer Pawluck, a 20-year old Montrealer, was arrested for posting a picture of an anti-police graffiti on … Continue reading »

Inheriting Nostalgia

I was raised in Montreal, and lived most of my life in the city of a hundred bell towers. When I was a teenager, my father worked as a superintendent in a posh downtown highrise located in the Golden Square Mile. It paid little, but it provided our family with a roof over our heads. … Continue reading »

The Blues and the Abstract Truth

It was white. Everything was white. Translucent. It was cold. Everywhere was cold. The neighborhood silent. Montreal, breathless. Frost. Ice. Still. Insomnia. January 1998. Lately, I fall asleep to the sound of woodwinds. Tonight, the sound of brass was muted by the storm, and replaced by the sound of wind whistling through the window pane. … Continue reading »

2752 Words on a WiFi Born Friendship

Tracy Fulks does Montreal. On film. And in 2752 words. I don’t care what Catfish says: you can make friends over the interwebs… I even met my wife on Plenty of Fish. Head over to Tracy’s blog to see Le Clown, behind the scenes, in the virtual flesh: here.

Past Lives and Pink Candy

I recently posted a picture of pink wintergreen mints on Facebook. Since I stopped drinking, I struggle with sugar and I satisfy my cravings with these candies. The pink mint picture triggered a discussion with my friend, Marie. She grew up in Jonquière, which is part of the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region of Québec. When Marie speaks, you can hear the Saguenay dialect in … Continue reading »

Welcome to Magnificence™. Population: Le Clown

Incorporated as a city in 1832, Montreal only truly came of age in 1971, when Le Clown soiled his first diaper. Mark Twain once said of Montreal: “This is the first time I have ever visited a city where you can’t throw a stone without breaking a church window.” The Roman Catholic Church left an … Continue reading »

Fuck in Absentia

You may have noticed the recent absence of the term fuck on this circus. Fuck has left the building. I started this blog using f*ck, then fu*k. I geeked out, and switched to frak. Fuck made its official entrance in March… it was exhilarating. I celebrated by using it everywhere I could: tags, titles, content, captions… … Continue reading »

Lame Adventure 333: A Brief History of Hollow

Reblogged from Lame Adventures: In July my friend and fellow blogger up in Montreal, Le Clown, published a post that resonated with me that he magnificently titled, “FTW LOL ”. For anyone that’s just emerged from a twenty-year hiatus trapped near the earth’s core that may be unfamiliar with Internet slang, FTW can mean For … Continue reading »
