Anthems for a Forty-One Year Old Man

“Music is the glue of the world”.
(Can’t believe I’m quoting Empire Records)

My wife and I met on an on-line dating site. On her profile: ”Queen of fucking everything. Pure fucking magic. No kids please“. On mine: “Before you send me a message, please know that I am a music lover. Please know that I am not exaggerating when I say I am a music lover. Please know that music will be playing wherever I am, at any time, no matter who’s with me. Want to take a shower? Bring the iPod. And a towel“. My wife and I had our first date at a Sigur Ros concert. Eight months later, we were procreating.

Let’s get to know each other through music, shall we? I’ll start the ball rolling with a handful of songs that are on constant rotation on my iPod. Feel free to give me your appreciation on any of them. But what I’d really like is a link to songs that tickle your fancy. Ready?

1. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros: Home. I’m not a huge Edward Sharpe fan. I do however love this song. It caters to the tree hugger in me, and it makes me long for a beard. It’s a fantastic live performance of a very sweet song.

2. The Joy Formidable: Whirring. I’ll be honest with you, I am not a fan of this band. If I want to listen to fuzzed-up guitars and emo lyrics, I’ll make my way to a Smashing Pumpkins song, even if it means clashing with Billy Corgan’s ego. This live performance makes my feet stomp, and wish I was part of the mosh pit, pogo dancing.

3. Okkervil River: The Lost Coastlines. A few years ago, The Ringmistress and I caught Okkervil River at a small venue in Montreal. So the concert ends, and my lovely wife-to-be needed to take a leak. While I was patiently waiting like the good man that I am, I saw Will Sheff walk towards me, and right by me without noticing my pretty face. I intervened, and forced him to shake hands with me: “Will, fucking great concert”. “Fucking thank you”, he answered. The Ringmistress came back with her hands washed – I think – and we went for hot-dogs.

4. Liars: Brats. Best song of the year? My car with the windows rolled down seems to think so. This video also wins weirdest clip since The Screaming Sheep.

5. Sigur RosFjögur píanó. I doubt Sigur Ros’ latest effort Valtari will win them any new fans. Personally, I think it’s a small masterpiece. I just wish they would have pushed the minimalist melodies to their breaking point. Heartwrenching video, and you get to see Shia LaBeouf‘s penis.

6. Broken Social Scene: Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl. BSS is one of Canada’s best kept secrets. It’s a collective lead by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, which at times has seen over 18 band members, including Leslie Feist (in video). Broken Social Scene is everything I love about music: loud, anthemic, layers of sounds, pure beauty. This clip is taken from Bruce McDonald‘s magnificent movie, This Movie is Broken.

7. A special treat: Le Clown and Tiny Geek dancing on The Black KeysLonely Boy. There’s a story behind this video, but you’ll have to read this for the details.

  1. Some more CanCon. Hey Rosetta, “Bricks” I can’t stop listening this song…

  2. Synchronicity strikes again! It’s still in my “drafts” folder (having gotten pre-empted by the arrival of actual CHICKENS), but there’s a post upcoming about a meeting-of-minds via iPod… When hubby and I met (locked up in rehab—which, I’m pretty sure, rates BELOW “online dating site” as a recommended place to hook up!) we traded iPods on day 3, just to see what was on each. A crazy-eclectic mix, in each case—but a crazy amount of overlap between the two. ;)

  3. I love that first band — they make me want to grow a beard as well. I think the guy’s muy sexy too. Thanks for introducing me to this music. And that last video — The Tiny Geek and her crazy ass daddy!
